SW Update – Marcha Gait Genectics

Dr. Ann, Dr Laura collecting data from Epico Capim Fino, who became the Champion of Champions at this year’s show

Dr. Ann Staiger of Cornell University is researching gaited horse breeds to find the “gait gene”.  Her studies also include lots of measurements of the angles and body parts of the horse to determine the role of conformation and gait.

Ann recently traveled to Brasil during the 2012 MM National Show at the invitation of the ABCCMM  and collected several hundred 100 samples there from champion Marchadors.  To date, this is the best and largest cooperation from a gaited breed association that she has received.

We are all looking forward to her final paper and maybe a video presentation!!!

Attached is a copy of an article that appeared in the ABCCMM magazine.  It is in Portuguese and English.  Enjoy.

Marchador Alps

Marcelo and Sophia Baptista are the owners and breeders of Agro Maripa.  They are great riders, adventurers and more like scientists in their research to produce a great Marchador sport horse.   They have been breeding Marchadors for over 30 years in Brasil.   These two stallions, Patek and Urano are both sons of Oma de Maripa, whose frozen semen we have here in the U.S.

Oma de Maripa, sire of Patek and Urano de Maripa, now in Europe. Frozen semen from Oma de Maripa is available here in the U.S.!

From the article:

“One more time we set ourselves in another adventure with our horses Patek and Urano de Maripa. This time we crossed the Alps with our friends Astrid oberniedermayr and Dieter Mader, both riding Ourofino El Far, another Marchador stallion.  Since the horses are based in Morlenbach, Germany, taking part in the ABCCMM’s  Vitrine of the Mangalarga Marchador Project, and due to the exceptional performance of Patek’s and Urano’s on the Santiago Way ride in Spain (May 2011), we have decided to test them again.

We left Lechbruck, Bavaria, South of Germany, on a rainy and cold, (9 C) morning, May 13th, 2012. Seven days and 240km later we arrived in Castel Iuval, Northern Italy, where we ended our trip. We rode through Oberammergau, Lermoos, Imst, Lafairs, Reschen, Laas.

Once more our horses bet themselves proving ail their resilience, courage, docility, providing us with great pleasure during the whole trip. They have not only improved our repertoire but also enriched our genetics knowledge.” – Sophia Baptista, Agro Maripa

SW Update – Congratulations to New Marchador Owners!

Congratulations to new owners of Mangalarga Marchadors here in the Southwest!  All great horse homes!

La Paz Jivago, 24k metallic dunskin, imported to the USValarie Giacalone, UT has purchased an SW Future Foal frozen embryo from Azenha de Maripa x La Paz Jivago (pictured left).  She made history when it took!  This will be the first Marchador foal produced from a frozen embryo in the U.S.!  It will be born in May 2013.  If it is a filly, the mare will be named Harlequin do Summerwind and if it’s a male, Hemingway do Summerwind.  Both Valarie and son Chris traveled here to Colorado (in August, after the breeding) to meet and ride the Marchadors and this is what Valarie wrote: If anyone was wondering, these horses are so much more magnificient in person than in their wonderful pictures! They could not be more perfect, and Chris and I are thrilled beyond words to be part of this family!

Debra Rowley, Dallas TX has purchased Flying Oaks Pegasus.   In a joint effort between Flying Oaks Ranch and SW Future Foal, the copper-bay gelding was sent to Ned Leigh of Ned Leigh Equine Focus, my equine transporter and horse trainer extraordinaire.   After she lost her mare,  Debra has been searching for a versatile horse that she can depend on and thinks Pegasus will be that guy.   Pegasus is a 3 year old, but has been climbing the ladder of experience with Ned to do long rides, water crossings, lateral work and will continue on with Ned with some specifics from Debra before heading to TX.   Ned says he is so light that he is a joy to ride.  Great gait too!

Oma de Maripa

Adrienne Scheck, Scottsdale AZ has reserved the Future Foal of Brasilia do Summerwind and Oma de Maripa!   Anyone who has met these 2 parents knows what a special horse this will be!   We couldn’t be more excited.  Expected late October or early November, code-named  Genghis-Khan do Summerind  (Adrienne has not picked new names), he/she will be a Mangalarga Marchador!   Power!  With a smooth and cadenced marcha batida gait, it will be a horse that can perform well at any discipline.  And Beautiful!   The first OMA foal in the U.S.!  SW has retained the breeding rights for the future, whether the foal be male or female, so it will be a shared day of joy for all of us!

Congratulations on getting your very first Marchador horse!!!!

Two very special SW Future Foals remain available for reservation. We guarantee our foals!   Expect to be IMPRESSED!!!!

SW Update – From Europe – Working Equitation

Attached is the pdf file with PICTURES!!!  Thank you Astrid Oberniedermayr for sharing!   It is great news for us here!

Click on this to view!  working equitation

Both Patek and Urano are sons of OMA DE MARIPA, one of the Maripa stallions whose semen we have to offer here.

Their results are so promising for the Marchador breed!  Both Brasil and here in the U.S., there is growing interest to move into Working Equitation events.   Here in the U.S., I have been approached by several individuals inviting the breed into events.

In case, the link does not work for you, here is the text without the photos.  For those of you who do not know Astrid, she is the Chairman of the European MM Association, the EAMM.

From August 30 until August 31, 2012,  we participated with the vitrine Marchador stallions Ourofino ElFar, Patek de Maripá and Urano de Maripá in the three disciplines of the Working Equitation competition at the Lengelshof in Ratingen.

The disciplines for each horse are
1. Dressage
2. Trail (Prova)
3. Cattle Work (Team Penning)

In the dressage contest,  the horses had to be good on the rider‘s aids and react lightly and immediately. No open mouths, no hesitations and a correct position of the head all the time. They had to show a canter directly  coming from walk (no trot or marcha inbetween), stop out of marcha, do lateral work etc.  The harmony of the movements and between rider and horse was very important.

Most of the horses participating in these contests have been Lusitanos and PREs.  This was the first time that Mangalarga Marchadores have been shown in this riding scene in Europe. They all did very well and
Patek de Maripá even won the dressage contest!

In the trail the horses had to manage the following obstacles:
1. cantering a figure 8 around two barrels with a flying lead change
2. riding into an „L“ and ringing a bell and stepping backwards out of the „L“ (horse may not touch the bars on the ground)
3. open and close a gate, rider‘s hand has to remain on the gatet
4. slalom through poles with lead changes
5. crossing a bridge (canter bridge, walk on the bridge, canter to next obstacle. NO trot or marcha allowed
6. jumping (aprox. 2 feet)

In the third discipline – the cattle work or team penning – the judges point out one little bull from the herd (10 – 15 calves). Then the rider/horse team has to separate the bull out of the herd and lead him to a paddock on the other side of the arena.  After the rider/horse team passes the middle of the hall he has three helpers.  The bull has to be brought to the paddock within 90 seconds. After 90 sec. without success you will be disqualified. Our times were 21 sec. with Ourofino, 52 sec. with Patek and 63 sec. with Urano. It is also some kind of good luck if you get a  “wild” or cooperate bull.  Some of the small bulls were very fast and making hooks like a rabbit. But the stallions paid excellent attention!

As Ourofino, Patek and Urano did so well many of the participants asked us to be their helpers during their contest. They said “I want the Mangalargas in my team!” That was a big compliment!

Most of the participating horses were Lusitanos and PREs (Andalusians)

At the end with the average of all points out of the three disciplines the Mangalarga Marchadors had the following ranking:

  • 3rd Patek de Maripá (6 years)
  • 6th Ourofino ElFar (7 years)
  • 8th Urano de Maripá (5 years)

Many people were asking us about the breed ot Mangalarga Marchador. Even the judges wanted to know more about the Marchadors!   The horses did a great job. It was the first time that they saw some of the obstacles, it was the first time doing cattle work (at least in Germany) and they didn‘t hesitate or leave us alone one single second.  We were very proud of the stallions and what they did again for the promotion of the breed.
We will continue …..

Astrid and Dieter
