Bossa Nova De Miami

Bossa Nova de Miami – a Memorial

Bossa Nova de Miami started my whole journey with Mangalarga Marchadors.     She is gone now to greener pastures, buried on a friend’s property next to her sister’s orphan foal overlooking the Blanco River in Pagosa Springs.   But what a life we lived together.

We were partners for 21 years, and I will forever wish it could have been longer.   We had many firsts together in the early years.   She was my first Marchador; my first mare; and my first gaited horse.   She was the first Marchador (we think) in endurance,  short-lived as she thought it too much work.   Bossa Nova was the first Marchador inspected and branded by the ABCCMM (Brazilian registry) in the U.S.  Dr. Jose Eduardo Teves and Dr. Getulio Viera traveling to us at our Scottsdale Ranch.   I remember building a fire for the branding iron and then running to the refrigerator for lemons for the branded area,  as they wanted to follow “tradition” to mark the occasion.   It took many years and hours at the ABCCMM registry office to get the paperwork in order for this to happen, but we felt it was worth it.  She was definitely worth it.

We rode together in the 2002 Rose Bowl Parade, probably against all wisdom as it was the first parade we had ever done.   She was not yet 4  years old.   She did really well, reacting only once to a place where the pavement changed to brick.

Bossa Nova was smooth to ride and smart, so often she won for a rider that just stayed on as Bossa Nova did the pattern or the obstacle.   She gave everyone confidence that rode her and I trusted her to keep my family safe – as they all rode her when they came to visit.

She was uncanny at remembering directions (something I am not good at).   She always knew where the trailer was parked.   One time when John and I were riding fast down a wash, she took a left that I didn’t even know was there.   John thought I disappeared!   And what do you know, it was a new trail, and a shorter way home.

Bossa Nova was the matriarch of the Summerwind herd.  She was the protector of me and of the other horses.   One time in Colorado, 2 workers jumped the fence to take a short-cut through her pasture.   But they failed to notice that her sister Chanel de Miami was in there as well with a new foal, Caesar do Summerwind.   Never in my life did I see Bossa Nova rear up, but she did at those men and then chased them over the fence!

In her later years, she was no longer as capable, but everyone deferred to her still.  Brasilia do Summerwind, younger and stronger and just as dominant, could have challenged her leadership, but it never happened.  There was honor and deference within the group.   Her wisdom and experience earned her that.

To say we will miss her is an understatement.    It is difficult to look at photos and remember being young together, riding wild and free and loving every minute.

Bossa Nova de Miami and all the “de Miami” horses were bred by the Guerra family of Miami FL who had the first Marchadors imported to the US in the 1990s.

Welcome to the Q babies!

The first to arrive came on Valentine’s Day and the night after! Meet Qiara and Qupid do Summerwind!

Born to Azenha de Maripa (x Jedi-Knight do Summerwind) and Azenha’s daughter Leia do Summerwind (x Violeiro do Riomar).

Both babies are reserved – one staying in AZ and one headed for CA eventually. Many Summerwind foals stay with us for a period of time after weaning for training and inspection.

We are looking forward to 4 more Q babies in 2022! The next are due to arrive in April!

Summerwind provides the first ABCCMM inspection for the foals where the foals prove parentage, are checked by a Brazilian inspector for genetic defects and microchipped. The foals that pass are eligible for the definitive inspection at age 3 and older which is under saddle.

Summerwind Marchadors & Summerwind Future Foal Breeders
“Expect to be impressed!”Celebrating Azenha de Maripa!

2022 will be her retirement year from having babies! But first, Azenha and daughter Leia do Summerwind are both expecting foals in February! It’s Azenha’s last foal and Leia’s first foal. It’s so special. Azenha was imported from Brazil over 15 years ago, and has produced wonderful foals for us — Beethoven, Hawke, Hemingway, Leia, North Star and soon Q baby.
Guess the foal birthday contest going on for both of them. Respond to this email. Pick the right day and win a prize from Summerwind. But the real prize is healthy moms and babies for mother and daughter.

Summerwind – Pagosa Springs
D.j. Sims Klein, Silver Stables, has moved to Pagosa Springs along with her husband Garrett and their 4 dogs. D.j. will be managing the Pagosa Summerwind ranch barn and property for us. With more time in Colorado, D.j. is planning to increase the number of summer camps and retreats in 2022! Watch for more news and dates for coming to visit us in Pagosa Springs!

We plan to keep Pagosa! Focused primarily on raising babies and training – both horses and people.
First photo is moving day to CO – January 10!

NEW: Summerwind – Simsbury

We have found a 22 acre farm in Simsbury CT so we can move closer to family. We are expanding!

Because the buildings need major repairs and rebuilding, John and I will be moving there with 6 horses (we hope) in 2023. An additional farm in the East will be great for the MM breed to expand and great for Summerwind too.  We are planning to move mostly older MM horses with us and may offer it as a retirement home for any MM in need.

On the property is an old English barn circa 1830. If we can save it, this will be our event facility and we plan to run a lot of events. Plan to come visit us!

I will be traveling more in the winter months so you can expect to see me show up in warm places, lol! And back to Pagosa for a summer retreat to ride and stay in the mountains.

Summerwind – AZ, TX, WA
We will still be breeding in Arizona and Texas with our breeders in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sedona and Corpus Christi!
But one more move there as well.

Elizabeth Sims, Silverwind Marchadors has moved too. She is about a mile from her old ranch. The new address is 38326 N 31st Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85086. It’s a work in progress, but the horses are all there already and look settled and happy. Planned to be a breeding operation, foaling operation, training and events facility.

And we will add a new training option in the San Juan Islands, WA too! More news on that later in the year.

More News from Summerwind Marchadors!
2022 is a banner year for Summerwind Marchador babies! All 6 foals have been reserved.

For 2023, we have 3 foals reserved, including the first foal expected by Kharisma do Summerwind and the last by Talisma Kafe, who has produced wonderful babies in the US and Canada.

If you are thinking of a 2023 “future foal” out of our Summerwind mares, still available would be the first foal for Giselle do Dreamcatcher (La Paz Jivago is our pick), or foals from Leia do Summerwind or Boneca da Lusonatica
.Great visit from our UK friends!
