New Marchador Mares — Flying Oaks and SW

Rick Schatz, MM breeder and owner of Flying Oaks Ranch, and SW Future Foal are working together to acquire four mares from Great Lakes Marchadors, MI.    With the death of their Marchador stallion, Jay and Susan Bryan have decided to stop breeding and have offered us their mares.   Summerwind Marchadors first imported two of these mares from Brazil in 2005 before they were sold to Michigan.

We are excited and happy to be adding new mares to our breeding program.   Two of the mares will be offered for sale, we hope to new Marchador breeders to continue their bloodlines as well as enjoy the ride!  However, if not sold, all the mares will eventually be housed in Oklahoma at Flying Oaks Ranch to live the good life on Rick’s lush pastures.    Ator Fazenda Zouga is a good match for the mares, but Flying Oaks and SW also will be breeding the mares with imported Brazilian semen to produce embryos.

If you are interested in an SW Future Foal, we would transport the mare and keep the mare and foal with us until weaning time at no additional cost to you.

Brisa Libertas – Koyote Libertas dam.  Brasilia do Summerwind dam.  Isabelle do Great Lakes dam.  Need I say more?   A beautiful mare, smaller at 14.2H, but with a marching gait as regular as a metronome.   She is older, so we are hoping to be able to produce some embryos from her, and offer her a forever home for the rest of her days.  Imported.  ABCCMM registered

 

 

Atriz de Itajoana – A smaller mare at 14.2H but also powerfully built with a beautiful face (Abaiba).   Atriz has had 2 foals here in the U.S. and we look forward to having her contribute more to the Marchador bloodlines here in the U.S.   Sweet temperament and a great pick if looking for a foal for the whole family to enjoy.  ABCCMM Registered

 

 

 

Amethyst do Summerwind – imported in-utero.  The only daughter of a renowned Brazilian stallion named Irapuru de Joatinga.   So, we are super excited to continue his genes.   Amethyst will be offered for sale to a forever home.   Priced to sell to a breeder, but if you are interested in her as a riding horse, we will sell her retaining  breeding rights to produce some embryos or foals from her.   ABCCMM registered

 

 

Isabelle do Great Lakes – Brisa Libertas x Oxum do Vale da Prata.  With his early death, Oxum left only 2 breeding offspring in the US.  He had a great gait and even better temperament.   Isabelle will be started under saddle starting November 1 and ready to go in February 2014.   You can buy her now for less and take over the training.   Priced to sell to a breeder, but if you are interested in her as a riding horse, we will sell her retaining breeding rights to produce some embryos or foals from her.  ABCCMM eligible.

MM Clinic August 2013

If you build it, they will come and so they did!   We had a wonderful experience hosting our own MM Clinic with Laura Patterson, a rider, trainer and vet from Brazil and Ann Staiger, gait genetics researcher from Cornell.

We have so many photos!  We will show more at the end of the screen too.

But, here are some highlights for us.

  1. The diagram of the marcha!  Gait Diagram
  2. Use the outside rein to get the horse to lift its head.  The Marchador carries the head high when it is doing the gait correctly.
  3. The marcha de centro is a new term being used in Brazil.  But when bred to the center, typically the Marchador will prefer one gait or the other.  Picada or Batida.   The horse falls into one naturally and is more consistent and less tired in that gait.  So, the riders pick up on that and train in the best marcha.
  4. The marcha batida is very comfortable to ride IF you as the rider, can relax and enjoy the ride! Any tightness or stiffness in the hips or the shoulders will usually show up as a bounce in the saddle.  The rider could be riding the same horse and prove this – we caught it on video too! (COMING SOON)
  5. Shorten the reins to set the gait and then relax.  Ride with your hands more forward and with more contact with the horse than you may be used to.
  6. Make sure your pinky finger is not holding the rein, but off the rein.  Your hand is naturally more relaxed and flexible in that position making it easy to make subtle movements with the rein.
  7. There is a fine line between the right level of collection and too much tightness or tension.
  8. For young horses, set the marcha gait and speed before ever training in the canter.   The marcha can be the same speed as a canter.  The horse does not need to canter at higher speed unless you ask for the canter.
  9. Tilt your hips so that your seat is more underneath you.  Don’t push your feet out in front, just tuck your seat.
  10. Enjoy the ride!  It’s a Mangalarga Marchador!

Brazil Trip 2013

Cheese bread!  Cachaca (sp)!  Old friends! New friends!  Marchador horses!  It was a trip to heaven – I mean Brazil!   It was the best of all worlds – I got to attend the National Show AND go out to visit farms!  Perfect!

We visited two farms in Brazil, a favorite of mine, Agro Maripa and a new one for me, but by no means new, Morada Nova.  Exquisite horses and fantastic Brazilian hospitality.  I am always happy to be in Brazil.

At the National Show, the event provided a good mix of entertainment and business.   We met old friends, and some new ones there.  It feels like home to me.    I went down with Rick Schatz, the Marchador breeder from Flying Oaks Ranch.   We did some business there on the Brazilian Saddle Horse project.   We did some shopping.  We admired the horses in the show and at the farm booths.   We did some ABCCMM registration work on U.S. Marchadors for several breeders.

Of great interest was the ABCCMM/APEX collaboration on the project Brazilian Saddle Horse.   APEX strives to promote Brazilian products around the world and has many offices here in the U.S.  They have already worked with the ABCCMM promoting the Marchador breed in Europe and also at the Carnaval in Rio 2013.   Their next events may be in the US in an affiliation with the PBR, Professional Bull Riding.  We will have to wait and see.  Also in the works is the Marchador at other big horse and non-horse events like the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
