Dr. Kate Moura da Costa Barcelos is coming from Brazil! She will be in Canada for an Equine Convention and ABCCMM Inspection. It’s the first ever held in Canada! Very historic. During her stay in the west, she will fly to inspect 2 of our Marchador horses in Colorado.
Photo shoot from April, reminding us how much she is growing!
Jewel do Summerwind will get a foal inspection. During this inspection, the foal is microchipped, whorls and markings are noted and the foal will be provisionally registered in Brazil if there are no disqualifying or heritable defects.
Isabelle do Great Lakes will be inspected under saddle and in hand for conformation, temperament and gait. If she gets enough points in each category, she will be permanently registered in Brazil and her foal expected in October, then will also be eligible to be double registered in Brazil.

Summerwind is committed to the quality and diversity of the Marchador breed here and we think the Brazilian inspection process is a great tradition to uphold.

The Brazilian Saddle Horse, the Mangalarga Marchador, was featured and shown during the PBR Finals week in Las Vegas! Many of the top ten professional bull riders are Brazilian and the sport is so big there, there is a PBR, Brazil! Thanks to APEX, Brasil who also support the PBR, the Marchador event came to life in Vegas, baby! Special thanks to APEX/ABCCMM Coordinator Ricardo Xavier who always has a full plate at events around the world and with his own wedding coming up in November! Congratulations Ricardo!
The Marchador is Brazil’s National Horse and so it was shown with much pride at the PBR FAN ZONE during the day and in the half-time show at the Thomas and Mack arena at night. The USMMA and the ABCCMM supported the APEX Brasil in manning booths in both locations too!
Many, many fans were interested in the breed and signed up to learn more. We gave away several hundred packets of DVDs, brochures, business cards and magazines about the Marchador breed! Not only was their literature, but some of the fans were lucky enough to test drive a Marchador at the PBR Fan Zone.
The horses were the stars of the show and they came long distances to participate!
From Ocala FL, Bellandi Racing Stables owner Claudia Bellandi came and shipped her imported Marchadors to Las Vegas! Imperador das Aguas JM, a grey stallion and Irana das Aguas JM, a grey mare. From MT, 2 Marchador breeders shipped 4 horses to Las Vegas. Lori Silcher, 4 Seasons Marchadors came with 3 horses — her blue roan stallion, Baluarte Piry, imported from Brazil, 4 Seasons Ana Raio, a buckskin mare, and 4 Seasons Lealdade, a chestnut mare. Dr. Tresa Smith came and shipped her grey gelding Lo-Borges de Lazy T.
Owners, breeders and support came from the U.S. Canada and Brazil with both USMMA President Rick Schatz of Flying Oaks Ranch and ABCCMM President Magdi Shaat of Haras El Far there.
And of course, Future Foal was there in almost full force – with me, Lynn Kelley, NC breeder Jeff Bosley and AZ breeder Karen Livesay. I was lucky enough to do some of the commentary during the Fan Zone presentations. That was almost as much fun as riding!
Long days, tired feet, but a great event. We hope to be out there again!
If you are looking for a personal horse or an investment opportunity, now is the time to learn more about this magnificent breed that is just getting started here in North America.

The clinic was taught by 2 Brazilian professionals from the ABCCMM, both of whom have taught at our past USMMA clinics. We welcomed them back!
Tiago de Resende Garcia – Tiago is the ABCCMM Director of the ENA – the National School of Judges. The ENA trains MM judges on how to evaluate conformation, gait and functionality of the Marchador. Tiago and his team judge every sanctioned ABCCMM show in Brazil, including the National Show in July which brings 1500 horses to the show ring over 11 days. Tiago has taught Marchador symposiums and lectures around the world.
Kate Moura da Costa Barcelos – Kate is a licensed vet and an ABCCMM inspector (the 1st woman). She has been the ABCCMM inspector for North America for several years. She is also an ABCCMM education program director. Kate is an accomplished rider, competitor and instructor; once the #2 dressage rider in all of South America. Studying for her doctorate, she balances work, school and her farm.
Attending the clinic were a mix of trainers, breeders and owners from far and wide.!
AB, Canada – Bill Dory, Sandy Dory, Blake Holtman, Patty Horner
BC, Canada – Gena Rome
AZ – Lynn Kelley
CA – Alessandra Deerinck, Linda Holst, Theresa Longo, Jake Martinez, Kendall Melline
OK – Rusty Parks, Rick Schatz
MO – Karin Roberts
MT – Tresa Smith (there for the PBR and clinic. Lori Silcher and her MM friend were also there because of the PBR so they joined in too!)
NV – Jim Hannah
TX – Cathy Pierce
NC – Jeff Bosley
SC – Aline Greene
UT – Valarie Giacalone
Spread over 3 days, the clinic featured some classroom parts, but mostly hand-on riding and teaching the marcha gait, Marchador conformation and the functional test. On Wednesday, the day was more relaxing with a beautiful trail ride in the red rock country of Nevada. Jim Hannah did a great job organizing this day.
Everyone helped throughout the clinic and one of the best parts of the clinic was getting to meet other Marchador owners and breeders! That actually may be the best part, for me. I had a great time there
Thanks to the clinic committee, the trainers and the participants for helping us pull off our 4th annual clinic! Special thanks to those that brought Marchadors – Bill and Sandy Dory, Jim Hannah, Flying Oaks and Rancho de los Cielos. The clinic cost is partially underwritten by the USMMA and the ABCCMM, so thanks to them too!
Next year’s clinic moves EAST to the Carolinas or Tennessee! A new format and new classes will be added – send in your suggestions – perhaps Working Marchador would be fun!
Our goal is to keep learning and enjoying our Brazilian Saddle Horses – the Mangalarga Marchador!
