SW Update – 2012 SW Award Winners!

We couldn’t be happier that this year’s big winner was Rox Rogers and La Paz Jivago from Haras Cayuse, MT.   Congratulations, Rox and Jivago!    (wild cheering and clapping!)

Rox and Jivago earned 9 points and thus won the top prize awarded in 2012 of $300.
  • Five Western Dressage events = 5 points
  • Three top three finishes for an additional 3 points
  • One parade event for 1 point

Western Dressage blends traditional Western riding and attire with Classical Dressage and good horsemanship.  The goal is to have a strong balanced horse that responds happily to the rider’s cues with lightness in both the horse and the rider.   Any breed may compete in Western Dressage.  If you have never heard of Western Dressage and want to know more, Rox wrote about it in more detail for the USMMA Fall Journal and she’d be happy to talk to you about how well her Marchador geldings are doing in this discipline!

Rox is an accomplished horsewoman who always keeps learning!  She owns three Mangalarga Marchador horses.  SW imported La Paz Jivago as a stallion in 2004.  He is a very beautiful, very athletic metallic dunskin.   After freezing semen for our breeding program, he was gelded and is happily living life with Rox in MT.

Other SW Marchadors earning points and winning fame and fortune included:
  • Amadeus do Summerwind & Kristy Everson in Mounted Shooting and Barrel Racing.  Amadeus without Kristy in a parade and team roping events.
  • Gus – Siglioso do Rav & Kristy Everson in Mounted Shooting and Barrel Racing.  Siglioso without Kristy in a parade.
  • Bacara do Summerwind & Jeff Bosley in the 2012 Sela de Ouro.
  • Cruiser – Caesar do Summerwind in Training Level Dressage
  • LEO – DaVinci do Summerwind & Connie Claire in the 2012 Sela de Ouro and Mounted Archery
The SW Award Program recognizes your efforts to promote the awesome Marchador breed using a SW Marchador (bred, sold or imported).   Getting our Marchadors in the spotlight – out into national or local all-breed events is not only fun, it helps others to see the quality, versatility and performance of the Marchador breed.   Any horse purchased from Summerwind, their foals or the product of a breeding from or to a Summerwind horse is eligible.  For a recap of the SW Awards program for 2012, click here.

SW Update – Gaia do Summerwind!

Gaia made history at 11:00 p.m.October 27, 2012, becoming the first MM foal born in the US using imported frozen semen from Brasil. A labor of love, our dream was realized when Agro Maripá collected and exported the first frozen MM semen from 3 of his stallions in Brasil.  Our continued thanks to Agro Maripa!

Gaia is the product of Oma de Maripa and Brasilia do Summerwind.  She was reserved by Dr. Adrienne C. Scheck of Scottsdale AZ and with SW Future Foal retaining breeding rights to her to ensure her genetics are carried forward in the U.S.

All of us are thrilled with her!!!!!

Her name Gaia was selected by Adrienne for a number of reasons.   Gaia (“guy-a”) is the goddess or personification of Earth or Mother Earth (the Greek common noun for “land” is ge or ga) in pre-Olympian Greek mythology.  The Gaia hypothesis proposes that organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a self-regulating, complex system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the planet.

Marchador Alps

Marcelo and Sophia Baptista are the owners and breeders of Agro Maripa.  They are great riders, adventurers and more like scientists in their research to produce a great Marchador sport horse.   They have been breeding Marchadors for over 30 years in Brasil.   These two stallions, Patek and Urano are both sons of Oma de Maripa, whose frozen semen we have here in the U.S.

Oma de Maripa, sire of Patek and Urano de Maripa, now in Europe. Frozen semen from Oma de Maripa is available here in the U.S.!

From the article:

“One more time we set ourselves in another adventure with our horses Patek and Urano de Maripa. This time we crossed the Alps with our friends Astrid oberniedermayr and Dieter Mader, both riding Ourofino El Far, another Marchador stallion.  Since the horses are based in Morlenbach, Germany, taking part in the ABCCMM’s  Vitrine of the Mangalarga Marchador Project, and due to the exceptional performance of Patek’s and Urano’s on the Santiago Way ride in Spain (May 2011), we have decided to test them again.

We left Lechbruck, Bavaria, South of Germany, on a rainy and cold, (9 C) morning, May 13th, 2012. Seven days and 240km later we arrived in Castel Iuval, Northern Italy, where we ended our trip. We rode through Oberammergau, Lermoos, Imst, Lafairs, Reschen, Laas.

Once more our horses bet themselves proving ail their resilience, courage, docility, providing us with great pleasure during the whole trip. They have not only improved our repertoire but also enriched our genetics knowledge.” – Sophia Baptista, Agro Maripa
