Atriz and Brisa Return
Congratulations to Bill and Carmen Leatherwood with their latest purchase of 2 wonderful and sweet Marchador horses for themselves and to share with their entire family.
We purchased these 2 mares in Brazil over 10 years ago and recently re-purchased them as they approached their golden years. However, their stay with us will only be a few months now, until their family picks them up in June to take them to their new Colorado home.
Brisa Libertas, imported by Summerwind in 2004 is a smaller but solid as a rock, bay roan mare, now 20 years of age.
Brisa is the daughter of ELITE Brazilian stallion Dominio da Joatinga and mother of our Summerwind Marchadors Koyote Libertas, Brasilia do Summerwind and Isabelle do Great Lakes.
Brisa’s breeder in Brazil is now breeding and winning at the national level under a new farm name, Capim Fino (fine grass).
Atriz de Itajoana was also imported the same year. Atriz had 2 foals while in Michigan: Agustos do Great Lakes (x Caboclo da Piedade) and Samuel do Great Lakes (x Oxum do Vale da Prata). Both are now geldings and remain in Michigan.
Atriz is the daughter of ELITE Brazilian Icaro de Itajoana. She was born in 2000 and imported as a three year old from Fazenda Santarem.

Overall SHOW CHAMPION– Flying Oaks Zodiac!
The clinic was taught by 2 Brazilian professionals from the ABCCMM, both of whom have taught at our past USMMA clinics. We welcomed them back!
Tiago de Resende Garcia – Tiago is the ABCCMM Director of the ENA – the National School of Judges. The ENA trains MM judges on how to evaluate conformation, gait and functionality of the Marchador. Tiago and his team judge every sanctioned ABCCMM show in Brazil, including the National Show in July which brings 1500 horses to the show ring over 11 days. Tiago has taught Marchador symposiums and lectures around the world.
Kate Moura da Costa Barcelos – Kate is a licensed vet and an ABCCMM inspector (the 1st woman). She has been the ABCCMM inspector for North America for several years. She is also an ABCCMM education program director. Kate is an accomplished rider, competitor and instructor; once the #2 dressage rider in all of South America. Studying for her doctorate, she balances work, school and her farm.
Attending the clinic were a mix of trainers, breeders and owners from far and wide.!
AB, Canada – Bill Dory, Sandy Dory, Blake Holtman, Patty Horner
BC, Canada – Gena Rome
AZ – Lynn Kelley
CA – Alessandra Deerinck, Linda Holst, Theresa Longo, Jake Martinez, Kendall Melline
OK – Rusty Parks, Rick Schatz
MO – Karin Roberts
MT – Tresa Smith (there for the PBR and clinic. Lori Silcher and her MM friend were also there because of the PBR so they joined in too!)
NV – Jim Hannah
TX – Cathy Pierce
NC – Jeff Bosley
SC – Aline Greene
UT – Valarie Giacalone
Spread over 3 days, the clinic featured some classroom parts, but mostly hand-on riding and teaching the marcha gait, Marchador conformation and the functional test. On Wednesday, the day was more relaxing with a beautiful trail ride in the red rock country of Nevada. Jim Hannah did a great job organizing this day.
Everyone helped throughout the clinic and one of the best parts of the clinic was getting to meet other Marchador owners and breeders! That actually may be the best part, for me. I had a great time there
Thanks to the clinic committee, the trainers and the participants for helping us pull off our 4th annual clinic! Special thanks to those that brought Marchadors – Bill and Sandy Dory, Jim Hannah, Flying Oaks and Rancho de los Cielos. The clinic cost is partially underwritten by the USMMA and the ABCCMM, so thanks to them too!
Next year’s clinic moves EAST to the Carolinas or Tennessee! A new format and new classes will be added – send in your suggestions – perhaps Working Marchador would be fun!
Our goal is to keep learning and enjoying our Brazilian Saddle Horses – the Mangalarga Marchador!

Arun is Coming! Arun is Coming!
SW Future Foal is arranging for shipment of frozen semen of 3 new Maripa stallions and Arun de Maripa is one of them!
Expected before year-end are 2 sons of Favacho Diamante, Fole de Maripa and Arun de Maripa and senior stallion Stradivarius HO. On our travels to Brasil, we have met and often rode all of these stallions, including the sire Favacho Diamante.
Favacho Diamante is an Elite Stallion and sire of many National Champions in Brazil. His Favacho and Tabatinga bloodlines were crossed with the great Maripa bloodlines that are so famous for beauty, conformation and temperament.
Agro Maripa has been breeding Marchador horses for over 35 years. His genetics are pure and traceable back to the 1800s. His horses are top drawer, consistent and proven. We admire Agro Maripa’s dedication (similar to Raul Junquiera of Tabatinga) to evaluate each horse for riding and for production. His love, care and training of his animals is seen and admired by all. For us, he provides a complete picture of horse partnership and a passionate promoter of the Marchador breed around the world. To see more of Agro Maripa, here is his website http://www.agromaripa.com.br
Carioca de Maripa is a son of Oma de Maripa (we have Oma’s semen too). Carioca has been proving himself in performance classes and calvagadas in Brazil. Great conformation and body, a younger version of Oma.
We will be adding new pages for each stallion with more information, photos and videos. Check back soon.
Please contact us to reserve your breeding today either with these new stallions or our old favorites: Oma de Maripa, Ximoio de Maripa, La Paz Jivago and Talisma Kafe.
Remember frozen semen lasts forever. Store some for future breedings!
