Brazil Trip 2016! Photos!

Brazil, the birthplace of the Mangalarga Marchador! We made it! We did it!   And had a fabulous time.

Our Brazil trip group of 9 people from AZ and FL were breeders and investors with Summerwind Marchadors, Inc. We traveled to four cities, 3 states and visited 5 Marchador horse farms while we were there. Enjoy our slideshow of the country, the horses! It’s as if you were there too.

Jedi-Knight born October 11!

We had a big crowd welcoming Jedi-Knight into the world on Sunday night!  At least 10 people hanging over the stall!

Maiden mare Isabelle do Great Lakes was superb!  What a good mother she is!  Nicknamed Izzy, she is owned by Karen Ann Livesay,  Future Foal @ Sedona.   And the surprise package is a pinto colt!   He is reserved by Elizabeth and D.J. Sims also in AZ, who will become Marchador breeders!   The whole atmosphere was charged with excitement and awe.

Jedi’s sire is Brazilian Marchador stallion Talisma Kafe, a black and white pinto, using imported frozen semen.

Here are some photos of Jedi’s first night.  Watch for new posts!  He is a cutie!

Breaking new ground

summerwind HPNew investors in the Mangalarga Marchador breed, partner with Summerwind Marchadors to create new investment ideas and opportunities.

“In the past, investing in the breed meant investing in a horse.   With Jack and Phyllis, we pushed into new ground.   Their investment goals did not include a Marchador horse directly, investing instead in the Summerwind frozen semen bank created from Brazilian Marchador stallions (6 so far)  and in new developments being planned.”

Since that initial investment,  a year  later, they also bought their own Marchador – Fidalgo do Summerwind.

Meet Phyllis and Jack!

Phyllis J. Ley – Born in San Francisco, has lived in California, Oregon, Washington, Montana and Arizona.  She is a retired Registered Dental Hygienist with over 25 years culminating in Coronado, CA at Naval Amphibious Base.  Phyllis loves the outdoors, landscape design, and collecting carousel horses.  She’s been interested in horses and horse lover all her life, owning them in Washington and Montana before Arizona. In 2011, they moved to Arizona, bringing her Quarter Horse and two new Arabians. Her only horse now is 3 year-old Arabian Gelding  training in Paulden, AZ with Ned Leigh. Her keen interest in Mangalarga Marchadors began when she saw a ground-training clinic for Marchadors at Ned Leigh’s Equine Focus in Paulden. Then when visiting Summerwind Marchadors, Inc in Pagosa Springs, CO she rode two of them – and really fell in love with these gentle, smooth-gaited horses! Now she is an Investor in Summerwind and wants to help ensure the breed has consistent, top-quality management while broadening her knowledge and understanding of the Mangalarga Marchador.

Jack R. Shriber – Born in Ogden, Utah and has lived all over the U S and in Europe, having retired from the U S Air Force with 28 year’s service responsible for Telecommunications Management. He became interested in horses when he and Phyllis lived in Montana and they bought a Quarter Horse there. Having observed the Marchador horse at both Scottsdale and Pagosa Springs ranches, he is also now truly interested in furthering the best development of Mangalarga Marchador expansion and growth in the U S through supporting Summerwind in Scottsdale and Pagosa Springs.

Jack and Phyllis join the family of Summerwind and Future Foal in setting a new direction and energy in Summerwind Marchadors.   They are excited to be part of the Marchador playbook and history.

More about Co-ownship and Investing

Future Foal “do Summerwind breeders include:

Get involved! Get invested!

Call us crazy. Own half a horse?   Yes, that is the new path we have entered when we agreed to purchase 50% of Cacacha de Tres Coracoes, a yearling filly in May of 2014.   It’s an international agreement as the mare will stay in Brazil with owner Ronaldo Ribeiro Tavares of Haras Tres Coracoes.

Cachaca now has a page on our website and we've added a new location - Brazil!
Cachaca now has a page on our website and we’ve added a new location – Brazil!

This co-ownership  concept is very common in Brazil.  At horse auctions similar to Thoroughbred sales here in the U.S., often one owner will sell 25% to 50% of a breeding animal.   That gives the co-owner the right to products (either semen or embryos) every other year.   The co-owners share the costs and hope like all investments – to make money!   The horse market is lucrative in Brazil with horses still being an integral part of society and a status symbol as well.

Even though she is young, we believed she had the potential to win at a national level in Brazil, making her products more desirable and expensive.    We are taking the chance and investing in a young mare now to get the best price point.   If we had waited and Cachaca does win at the Nacionals, we could probably not afford to buy half – or it might not be offered for sale.   Our belief was verified in July 2014 when her half-sister won Champion Mare in the Marcha Gait  and Champion of Champions at the National Show.

10382051_692827837419043_4113547165785578317_oCachaca is the daughter of Fator da Cavaru Reta, a top, sought after palomino Marchador stallion in Brazil.   After visiting the farm of Tres Coracoes, we were impressed by the breeder’s  thoughtfulness in breeding, and his care for his animals.   The training staff were kind to the horses.  Plus, we like the name! (Cachaca is a Brazilian rum.)

The benefits of the sharing ownership concept:

  • The investors now have more of a pool of money to promote and campaign their horse and to advertise the horse to make more money from the offspring.
  • As an investor, you could get rights to products or offspring if that is something you desire.

If you love horses, but cannot keep a horse of your own, the investment allows you to share the spotlight, participate in all of the fun events, but not worry about the day-to-day care and feeding of the horse.   Think of the partners in California Chrome, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, the ultimate experience for both of them.

  • In the Marchador breed (and perhaps others as well), you are sponsoring a new breed that is making history in its march to go global.  You are contributing to history.  You are MAKING history.

The downside, of course, is that you may not make any return, either in the short-term or ever.   But that is the nature of investments.   You can protect yourself by doing the research on the market and on the horses, and picking a partner that is proven and successful already.

Interested in getting started with the Marchador breed?   We would love to help you explore this co-ownership option or other options to help us out with starting up the breed.    We have plenty of ideas!

Jewel do Summerwind, the Movie

Born at 3 p.m. on March 27th!   What a treasure!   A full sister to Gaia do Summerwind, we have another outstanding filly from Oma de Maripa (using imported frozen semen) and Brasilia do Summerwind.

Oma de Maripa has foals here in the US and we have more frozen semen to create again.

Brasilia looks stunning and elegant again, just hours after she looked hot and slow carrying this big foal around!

Summerwind_Marchador_horse_10Jewel is a very TALL foal and her IGG results were off the charts (healthy).  We just know she will be great!

The Marchador is the ultimate Brazilian Saddle Horse.  With fewer than 300 horses here in North America, every foal is precious and welcomed.   We are fortunate to have frozen semen from several stallions from Agro Maripa in Brazil.   With their emphasis on genetics, their Marchadors are truly gaited sport horses with beauty and temperament guaranteed!
